Yesterday was Thanksgiving for all of us Americans here in Oz. Happy Thanksgiving for all of you at home today!
A few of our friends celebrated the traditional turkey dinner way. We had curry rice :) it was fun though to see how many of the Americans were holding true to traditions in a country that had no idea what we were talking about. I was also pleasantly surprise at a few of our non-american friends enthusiasm for Turkey Day! Everyone we knew were making trips to Costco. I've heard it's the place to go for comfort level pumpkin pie!
It was rainy but warm, and didn't feel anything like Thanksgiving. Seriously, who wants to cook all day over a stove & next to an oven when it's 80 degrees out!?! it also doesn't feel like Christmas is coming. I see signs of it popping up all over the city. TV commercials are the same here as they are at home. But it just doesn't feel like Christmas. Maybe it will once we're home & shivering!!
I've heard the New Years tradition here is to have a beach party :) I'm kind of sad we're going to miss that one.
Speaking of traditions, being Thankful was the order of the day so here are a few things we're thankful for:
James- so thankful for all the support we've had from our families while on our trip. For the experiences he's had & the friends he's made. He's also thankful for the prices and quality of beer available in the US cause it's expensive here and hit or miss with the quality!
Cavan- is thankful for the stories we've been reading from the library. also for all the playing we've been doing. He's thankful for trams and the beach! and babyccinos, and the ratty deck of cards Neal gave him as he was headed back home to the US. Neal if you read this Cavan worships you & Robbie :)
Declan-is thankful for the number 6 (although when he held his fingers up it was only 4). He is also thankful for "Behntehn" (ben 10), "Niimo" (Nemo) and eating. or so he says.
I am thankful for almost to many things to list. The whole experience/opportunity to live halfway around the world. The incredible people we've met and befriended. Our home & neighbors for the past 5 months. Mostly though I am thankful for James, Cavan & Declan. They've made everything about this trip wonderful, and amazing and exciting, I thank my lucky stars everyday for them :)
11 days and counting. We're busy doing and seeing everything we can before we come home. I am excited to see everyone at home and to share our stories but am truly sad to leave. Hopefully James' school will bring us back for a few more years. We've decided that we love it here and will miss the life we've made.
Love you all and see you soon!
By the way, this is about as "Christmas Cheer" as we've seen so far. I took this a few days ago and it was about 90 Degrees...

Brotherly Love
My favorite thing about this whole trip is how much time we get to spend together. Even if it seems like we are crazy busy, we still spend the majority of every day together. The boys especially have become super close, always playing little games that make no sense to us but fit perfectly for them, it's like they have their own language. James caught them today like this :)
The boys also have the funniest habit of getting out of bed & falling asleep in random places while we are watching TV. Usually they sneak into our bedroom where we will find them on our bed or the floor. The other day we got up from the couch ready to head to bed and we found this! hehe somehow he got into the fridge to get his water bottle, left the fridge cracked open and fell asleep next to us and we had NO idea! This might become my favorite story about the trip :D

What it's really about
Ok, Ok, I know 13 days is not even close to quick... but this one's worth the wait.
These photos are really what this whole trip is about. It's about us. James, Cavan, Declan & I on the trip of a lifetime, learning together, growing closer and experiencing this amazing city as a family. I will always cherish the time we spent here, early morning fire alarms and all ;) I'll never forget the way Cav, Dec & I traipse all over the city in search of parks & playgrounds and small discoveries, little nooks & corners of awesome-ness. That we can stop on any block for a latte & 2 babyccinos and have 30 minutes of giggles & enjoy has become a comfort ritual for us.
I haven't nearly shared as much as I'd like to with you all and at the moment I'm telling myself that I will do better this last stretch of our time here. I tell myself that it's better to keep up with them here & be organized with all the photos we've taken. The importance of getting all our stories down in writing before we forget. I honestly don't know if it will happen though. we will see :) hehe our photos from our trip to Maui in March are still waiting patiently for me to get to them...
so yeah,
The only thing cuter than a 5 year old in his Batman suit, is his two year old brother in that same batman suit.
and we adore the beach culture here. Very vintage boardwalk classic. Every chance we get we take the 15 min tram ride to the beaches. We were lucky enough to spend the afternoon a few weeks ago with a photographer friend who took family photos for us. It felt amazing to be able to set the camera down for a bit.
The first two photos are mine. The rest were taken by the fabulous Dani. :)
Enjoy

Victoria Market Photo Shoot!
Went on an Orange and Red themed photo shoot with about 20 other photo enthusiasts. it was fun but also kind of a challenge! Here's a few of my favorites. I was really working on texture & depth for my shots. These were all taken at the Queen Victoria Market.
P.S. I've got a bunch of stuff to put up so check back soon! Sorry I've been slacking!

Photos of our apartment building!
Here are some photos of our apartment building. The last three were taken by our friend Ria on her iPhone & she was nice enough to send them to me :) Thanks Ria!
The first 3 are of our building. You can see the red & black UniLodge sign on the left. Our entrance is where the NAB sign is. The 1st photo is the first 11 floors of our building, there are three more stories. You can also see Nandos on the bottom right corner. The 4th is the right side of our block. That's Melbourne Central Station (Yep :) we live 100ft from an underground train station, it's built like a mall going 4 stories up and then you just take a series of escalators down into the actaul train station) The 5th is across the street on the lawn of the Victoria State Library. These were taken back in July when it was COLD. Now that it's getting nicer there are more people out every day!
Lastly the ones from Wed night. The fire-truck in front of our building. Us at Hungry Jacks and yeah Declan fell asleep at soon as they got outside and continued to sleep through the whole thing.

Our building caught on fire
First off we are all ok! We're pretty tired & a bit shaken up but completely fine.
Our night:
James and I were getting ready for bed just before 11PM. The Building fire alarm/ emergency evacuation alarm went off in the hallways. Because we had experienced a fire alarm evacuation when we first got here, we had talked about what we would do in another situation like that. We also have to plan for the fact that I am a Resident Advisor, so once James & the kids are safely outside I have duties to fulfill like evacuating the building and helping the Firefighters around to the places they need to get. Let me just tell you how proud I am of how efficiently we handled everything. And I would suggest you talk to your partner & kids about what you would do in certain emergency situations!
Ok, back to the story. We immediately got dressed, I went to the door to check the hallway and see what was going on. There was nothing that I could see so we weren't really alarmed but because I need to be able to help evacuate the building we continued to get the kids ready. Honestly it's better to act like it's an emergency because if it was really dangerous, time counts. WIthin three minutes the alarm paused and as soon as it stopped we both froze and looked at each other. I told James I would go see what was going on and he continued to get the kids ready. We live on the opposite side of the building as the lifts so as I walked towards the stairs & lift I could smell smoke and feel heat and one corner of our level was completely filled with smoke. I ran back to the room and told James there really was a fire and there was already smoke in the hallway. We grabbed the stuff we needed and left our apartment. At the stairwell I left James & the kids, they went down & headed outside where I would meet them across the street on the lawn of the State Library.
The first thing I did was run around to every door on my floor, pounding on it and telling them that there was a fire and the building needed to be evacuated. One guy opened his door and said, "so, we need to go outside then?". I was like umm yeah, there's a fire..... come on people! lol
Then I went downstairs and helped keep people organized & calm as they left, giving them instructions on where to go, There were several dramatic moments where A woman on the 11th had accidentally gotten locked out of her room and her baby was still inside (Mom & baby are ok, some smoke inhalation issues but not seriously hurt. The RA that went up to get the baby did end up getting sick from inhaling too much smoke. He's a HERO!!)
It was crazy. People crying & screaming which was totally out of control, we had to stop people trying to get back to their rooms when they realized that their belongings might really be lost in a fire. Friends that were panicking because they couldn't find so&so. The worst part was the smoke was everywhere from the 1st floor to the 14th so they just didn't know where the fire was. In some areas it was so thick you couldn't see anything.
The sprinkler system in Nandos ( a restaurant on the ground floor of our building) was activated so the ground floor had 3 inches of water flowing already by the time I got down there. The water was oily because it was running over all the Nandos kitchen stuff, so people kept falling. It was intense at the time but now that we know everyone is safe I can't help but laugh at the people who were SUPER dramatic.
So the other RA's and Unilodge employees and I did the best we could to evacuate the building and when the firefighters were ready to take over we went outside and waited.
James and I had grabbed the boys' jackets and a blanket for each of them. Outside a family with a little boy a bit younger than Declan hadn't grabbed anything warm enough for their little guy, so James gave them Declan's jacket and we wrapped Declan up in his blanket. It was getting cold, especially for the kids so we went to Hungry Jacks a block down and had coffee & hot chocolate. We were back into our building around 1:30AM. We put the boys to bed and I went back down and helped get people back to their rooms. Many of the residents had lost their keys and the power was still out so the hallways were pitch black. I don't think I actually got back to our apartment until almost 4AM.
The power in our apt was still on the but most of the buildings main power, the TV's and the internet were all out until this evening. The building reeks of smoke and burnt chemicals. The ground floor is still soppy but they're trying to dry it out.
I've just returned from the briefing with our building manager Kerrie. The exhaust above the Nando's cook stove had caught on fire. The fire traveled all the way up the exhaust 14 floors to the top of our building where it's supposed to empty out into the air. The roof caught on fire as well and luckily the firefighters were able to contain it all before it spread but they said it was seconds from catching the engine room of the lifts and if it had there could've been a small explosion and the fire could've gotten out of control.
We are so thankful that everything turned out alright and there have been lots of funny stories shared. One of our friends took a few snaps with her iPhone and she's promised to email them to me so as soon as she does I'll put them up.
So yeah. It was a crazy night.

TIm Burton Exhibit
On Saturday we went with the Unilodge group to the Tim Burton Exhibit. It was an INCREDIBLE dip into the brilliant mind of Tim Burton, where we were able to see costumes from movies, drawings, paintings, sketches. There were interactive pieces and we had our very own costumed tour guides!! LOL Our friends Reza & Mo dressed up as Edward Scissorhands and The Joker. We couldn't let The Joker wander around without Batman to keep him in check so Cavan got to play the good guy. The boys got all dressed up and as we walked the three blocks from our apartment to the museum we got A LOT of attention. People stopped us about every 50ft to get a picture with them. It was really funny and the boys ate up all the attention. Cavan pretended he really was Batman. He was very responsible and took his role so seriously. Mostly "helping" Declan and I. Which drove Declan crazy...
At the exhibit we got a photo of Batman with his Batmobile. I got several shots of Batman & The Joker holding hands as they were walking which was cracking us up! And we didn't want Declan to feel left out so he got to represent as well :)
After the exhibit we came back to our apartment and had a big nap. Then we had a Tim Burton Movie Marathon starting with The Nightmare Before Christmas and then James & the Giant Peach. We won J & GP!! So now I get to watch it over and over!! hehe
When we finally got settled for bed that night Cavan told us, "it was the best day of his life."
Me too Cav, me too.

Oh the sadly neglected blog!
A short bits of news/facts/random trivia:
James' Spring Break is the 20th-24th.
Victoria is having record breaking floods after 10 years of drought.
Australia has just elected Julia Gillard, their first Female Prime Minister, to Office ( She was the first ever acting female PM in June '10 when she took over office from Paul Rudd)
It's Melbourne's Spring Fashion Week
It's starting to get warmer. I LOVE it
Did you know DVD's are encoded with Zones so that they only play in their zone? We had to change our laptop to be able to play AU DVD's
For the year 2010 Melbourne has an estimated population of 4,000,000
I watched the Ellen Degeneres show today! It originally aired in March.
Melbourne has the largest tram network in the world. It's fantastic. They have Heritage Trams dating from the 1930's that run on certain routes. Those are our favorite :)
Cultural laughs:
I like when Australia give encouragement. Most often I hear, "Yeh, good-on, ya"
Cavan wants to play soccer for AU
On Sunday we went to dinner with a few friends. We celebrated three birthdays (Rupa, Jay & me all within 6 days) and Sunday was Fathers Day in AU so James got an extra daddy day this year :)
